Who Pays the Piper?
A young man’s body is pulled from the river, a blow to the back of the head, his identity a mystery. Not far away, a burnt-out car is found in a field. The two seem unrelated—until whispers of a secretive eco-cult begin to surface.
Detective Sergeant Mulroney is no stranger to dead ends, but something about this case doesn’t sit right, particularly when a cigarette lighter found near the car is traced back to a luxury hotel, under surveillance for drugs and prostitution. And who is responsible for pushing him off the road and firing at him? Add a local church community riven with arguments and short of cash, a woman with strange outbursts of anger and at the centre of it all is Cosimo—wealthy, untouchable, and dangerously persuasive.
So who is the young man? How did he die and who wants the information to remain hidden?
Available from July 2026, the second in the Detective Mulroney series has some characters you will recognise, and some new ones, all set against the backdrop of a small town in the wonderful Cotswold countryside.
